МПС III типа, или синдром Санфилиппо, возникает в результате дефицита одного из четырех ферментов – гепаран N-сульфатазы, α-N-ацетилглюкозаминидазы, ацетил-CoA: α-глюкозаминида N-ацетилтрансферазы и N-ацетилглюкозамин-6-сульфатазы, которым соответствуют четыре подтипа заболевания – МПС IIIA, IIIB, IIIC и IIID. Вследствие внутриклеточного накопления гликозаминогликана (ГАГ) гепарансульфата развивается прогрессирующее мультисистемное заболевание, основным признаком которого является дегенерация центральной нервной системы.1,2
